This week we discuss the Importance of “Turning Negative Experiences into Positive Motivation”
This week, while hosting our LIFTwarrior TikTok live sessions from Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 8:45 AM, and interacting with the LIFT Team members across the different social media platforms we use, I was reminded of the importance of turning our negative experiences into positive motivations to allow ourselves to grow.
Life is made up of many experiences, both good and bad. It’s obviously easy to celebrate our successes in life, and it’s often the tough times that will help us become a stronger person. With this article we wanted to look at how our negative experiences can motivate us to improve ourselves and help us take control of our lives.
Understanding the Impact of Negative Experiences
Negative experiences, like when we fail at our personal tasks, struggle with our mental and physical (Nutrition), health (Nutrition), relationship issues, money problems, disappointments with ourselves, (Nutrition), or others around us, and even traumatic events we have gone through, can leave a lasting emotional scar that affects how we think and react. As you can see Nutrition is now on my radar which I explain below.
These feelings can make us feel not good enough, scared to move forward, and hopeless. While these moments are tough and painful, they also help us grow. They motivate us to think about who we are currently and who we desire to become, it also challenges us to rethink our goals, and understand our true strengths.
Two weeks ago, I had a VA appointment that inspired our article "Reflection," and I found out that I am now officially Type 2 Diabetic, which we are not surprised about. For years, doctors told me I was borderline, but I’ve now crossed the line and need to take medication for it. Last November, I ended up in the hospital because my blood pressure was dangerously high, and they had to rush me in. My amazing wife, Amy, started working on a new nutrition plan for us, and we switched to a Mediterranean diet. She’s done an incredible job, and the meals have been awesome. With this new challenge in our lives we have decided to share a little bit of that journey with you. Starting next week we have decided to share one to two recipes per month to help you add some variety to your family’s meal plan.
Let's get to the nuts and bolts of this and learn how to become a better, stronger version of yourself.
Shifting Perspective From Victim to Survivor
The very first step you can do in turning your negative experiences into motivation is change your perspective of how you see them. Instead of seeing yourself as victims of the challenging circumstances, you can choose to see yourself as a survivor and become teachable and trainable.
To do this, you will need to do the following:
Acknowledge Your Feelings, It’s important to accept the emotions you are feeling. When you bottle up your feelings of anger, sadness, or frustration it will slow down your personal healing preventing a breakthrough from happening in your life. Allowing yourself to feel these emotions is the first step toward moving past them.
Identify Lessons Learned, Every tough challenging situation teaches us something. By reflecting on what went wrong and what we could have done differently, we can learn valuable lessons that will make us stronger.
Embrace Change, Our bad experiences often force us to face parts of ourselves we may not want to. Accepting and learning from these changes helps us understand ourselves better and grow as individuals.
In our previous articles we have discussed resilience and we are revisiting it for it is the ability to bounce back from hard times. By working on building resilience, we can turn our negative experiences into sources of strength. Here are some ways to build resilience:
Set Realistic Goals, Use your experiences to set goals that challenge you but are still achievable. This will help keep you motivated.
Develop a Support System, Surround yourself with positive people—friends, family, or mentors—who can offer support and fresh perspectives. Check out last week's article, "Surrounding Yourself Around Positive People"
Practice Self-Compassion Be kind to yourself during tough times. Remember, everyone faces challenges, and mistakes are part of life. Being kind to yourself helps you stay positive. Leave the past in the past.
Engage in Positive Activities Spend time doing things that make you happy and fulfilled, whether it's a hobby, helping others, or getting active in the areas you're passionate about. These activities can help lift your spirits and give you a sense of purpose.
Turning our negative experiences into motivation is an ongoing process. It’s important to remember that setbacks will always happen, but they don’t define us. Instead, we can view them as part of our growth journey and use them to better understand ourselves and the world around us.
When it is all said and done, the negative experiences don’t have to control us. By learning from them and working on becoming stronger, we can take charge of our lives. The power is in our hands to turn challenges into a force for positive change and create a life that reflects our true potential.
